It’s that time of year when the ghosts, goblins, monsters, witches and creepy ghouls come out to play and it’s even better when our dogs get to join in on the fun festivities too.
Dressing up in costumes is always a good time, but what about getting your pup involved too? For the past three years I have been teaming up with my trusty sidekick Julian for our Halloween costumes and it’s an excellent way to share the fun and make great memories too.
The first year I dressed up as Snow White and Julian was my Prince Charming. You’d be surprised at the positive feedback we got. After this, I thought this was a start of a new tradition that I can start with my dog. I lost the picture of us, but you can see me in the background of my husband’s pic. He was dressed up as “Saint Bernard” with our St Bernard Sophie. I’ll definitely be bringing this Disney classic costume duo back for a future Halloween.
The second year, I went looking for inspiration online at Rubie’s Pet Shop Boutique. If you’re not familiar with Rubie’s, they sell most of their doggie costumes on Amazon and sometimes you can find some of their costumes at local pet shops (link below). So while looking at various costumes, I found a shark costume that stood out to me. Hmm how can I pair up with a shark??? Then it hit me…I’ll be Katy Perry and Julian can be my Left Shark!
This year I have taken it back for some old school vibes. For our first costumes we channel the old television show The Munsters, and I was Lily Munster and Julian was Grandpa Munster. I was so busy at our 3rd Annual Howloween Boonanza that I never got pictures, but that’s ok because it wasn’t my favorite costume theme…it just didn’t hit the mark that I was hoping for. However, our next costumes was a whole other story.
For the next round of costumes, I tapped my husband to join us as 80s Rap Group Run DMC. This time we upped our game with not only wearing matching Adidas track suits, but my husband supped up a kids pedal BMW he found on Craigslist that he repainted, added a custom license plate and mounted a speaker so I could play “Walk this Way” via Bluetooth from my phone. We attended a local doggie Halloween event in Waikiki and needless to say we were a surprise hit, so much so we took home first place in the doggie costume contest.
It never occurred to me to team up with my dog, but it has been the most fun I have ever had in my history of dressing up for Halloween…which I never really did because it just wasn’t a holiday that I got involved in, until now. So whether you’re getting into the Howloween spirit this year or considering next year’s costumes, think about partnering up with your dog…you will be surprised just how much fun you can have.
